Year 4 Pupils Show Flare With African Drumming

Year 4 Pupils Show Flare With African Drumming

Supported by Redbridge Music Service, Year 4 have been learning to play the djembe, which are drums originally from West Africa.

We’ve learnt that we use our right hand to play the bass and our left hand to play a tone, on the edge of the drum, with only four fingers.

We’ve played a flam rhythm,a cha-cha and soca rhythm too. It has been fun to learn to play all together and it’s great to learn a new instrument. At first we found it hard to remember to lift our hands up to make a nice sound that a normal drum makes and it can be challenging to follow the beat without getting too fast! Our teacher makes the lessons interesting, teaches us body percussion and we play games to warm-up.
