Governor Dr Nkyi

As a psychologist working in public health, I value the importance of giving children the best start in life to enable them to achieve their potential. It is a passion of mine that every child has opportunities to explore their potential, has the support system to grow and develop even beyond their own aspirations. I have a particular interest in the inclusion of marginalised groups and work to drive improvements in the experience and life outcomes of marginalised members of the community.

I have applied to be a governor to support schools in their capacity as the first significant agency in a child’s life that helps to shape their perspective, self-image and purpose in life.

I have been working with children and young people for 20 years and more in various capacities. Based in a secondary school in a previous role working to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for children and young people living in communities ranking among the top 5 percent of deprived communities in England, I developed and implemented innovative strategies and projects to engage the community. As part of many poor indicators, the area had significantly high underachievement, high unemployment rate, and were disengaged with mainstream services.

Currently, I lead on children and young people department in my church with a membership of around 200 people. I have increased the number of volunteers, established protocols to comply with safeguarding guidelines including DBS checks, trained volunteers and established holiday clubs that is popularly attended by children and young people which provides positive activities for children most of whom come from low income families who may not be able to afford paid holiday schemes. Most importantly, I continue to champion the needs of young people influencing the church to be outward focused to share its resource with the wider community.

I declare, I or my relatives have no pecuniary or business interests.
