Maths

By the time they leave our school, we want all pupils to be confident and competent mathematicians. In order to achieve this, pupils must become numerate – have a fluent knowledge of arithmetic; be able to work with numbers – and also develop the ability to reason, use known mathematical facts and concisely explain their reasoning of a mathematical problem. It is important that pupils see that maths is not an isolated subject as they will be required, throughout their education, to apply the skills learnt in Maths to other areas of the curriculum and their everyday lives.

How Do We Teach Maths?

Each daily maths lesson sees pupils practise and hone their fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills through teacher modelling, specific questioning and independent practice. Daily times tables practise is also incorporated into every lesson with a weekly times tables test and an arithmetic test every Friday. Pupils are also encouraged to take responsibility for improving their rapid recall of times tables and related division facts at home through the use of Times Tables Rock Stars (click on ‘Home Learning’ to find out more).
