London Youth Choir

London Youth Choir

On Tuesday 9th May Churchfields Choir (Years 3/4/5) sang at an incredible concert. As a choir, we were noticed when performing at The O2 and personally invited alongside a few other schools, to collaborate and sing with the 450 members of London Youth Choir (LYC) to celebrate their 10th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall.  The London Youth Choirs are made up of a family of 10 separate choirs, including changing voices, chamber and youth choirs.

Aled Jones MBE was the compere for the evening and as Honorary Patron of LYC, Gareth Malone OBE gave a speech thanking the co-founder and artistic director, Rachel Staunton, for growing the organisation and running all 10 choirs in such an inclusive and accessible way.

Our Choir was given the repertoire a few months ago and thanks to the funding of LYC, CJS was sent LYC leaders for free to deliver three 2-hour workshops to help our choir learn the songs. The programme was full of fun songs but also included 2 specially commissioned songs for the night, written by 2 female composers, Brenda Rattray and Amy Brice, and a song to include sign language.

I love to be able to present the choir with these wonderful opportunities to grow and challenge themselves.  I was so proud of how seriously they took on the responsibility of solo home learning then coming together to sing as a group. Their behaviour and singing at the concert were exemplary all day.

Facts: When singing or playing music your brain is busier than that of an air pilot or brain surgeon doing their jobs and singing as a group develops cognitive function, emotional intelligence and social skills.

There are 42,000 choirs in the country and more people singing in groups than playing amateur level football; we are obviously doing something positive, beneficial and popular.

As the families of the children, I hope you enjoyed the concert and more importantly are very proud of the growth you are seeing in your musical young people.
