Year 3 Diwali Assembly Dance
Year 3 had fun learning Bhangra dancing which originated in the Punjab region of India. Traditionally a good harvest was celebrated by dancing and singing songs to the sound of the dhol drum. The dance rhythm is set by the dhol which provides the bass to the dance. It is a large North Indian drum played with cane sticks. The tension is adjusted to produce the bass and treble sound. The dance uses a lot of arm and shoulder movements. Bhangra is now used to describe a high energy dance style of dance music developed by young Asians and performed at weddings and parties. Bhangra fuses Western pop music, Hindi film music and folk music from the Punjabi region.
