Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP impressed with standards at Churchfields
Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP accompanied by Mark Herbert, a dignitary from the British Council was highly impressed when they visited Churchfields Junior School just before Easter. Mr Gibb presented Alyssa Malley in Year 6 with a certificate and book token for winning 3rd place in the Commonwealth Writing Competition. A link to Alyssa’s story from last month’s newsletter is below.
As the Minister for School Standards, during his tour of each classroom, he drilled each class. The speed of pupil’s mathematical calculations, ability to talk about quality literature and general knowledge when he quizzed them met with his approval. We discussed data and assessment and Mrs Emeny was able to highlight some of the anomalies in the current system.
During the ministerial visit he spoke about projects involving a visit to Shanghai and a challenge project which would further help Churchfields to become a world-class school.
As his private secretary commented on their departure, the Minister is not normally this happy and he was clearly pleased with what he saw in the School. In fact, when he saw the drawings the children were creating in an art lesson, he lamented that he wished he had been taught by our artist-in residence the skill of drawing, when he was a young boy.
