Churchfields Junior beat Wanstead Church Primary 6-1

Churchfields Junior Beat Wanstead Church Primary 6-1

On Tuesday 22nd May, Churchfields Junior School’s 7 a-side team went to Woodbridge High School in order to play a crucial league game against Wanstead Church.Having won two games and lost one earlier in the season, Churchfields knew that a win would be enough to see them through to the knockout stages of the Redbridge league.

After a nervous start that saw little attacking threat from either team, Churchfields found a way through. Tristan, playing in the striker role looped the ball over his head and found Ben who coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net. Churchfields were 1-0 up in a very even game. Wanstead then grabbed momentum by stringing together a number of dangerous passes. It could have been 1-1 if not for some fantastic saves from the Churchfields goalkeeper Josh. He closed down the strikers and won the ball at every opportunity, making numerous incredible saves, pushing one on to the post and away. Churchfields began to grow in confidence and with five minutes remaining of the first half, they bagged two more goals. The first after some excellent work in the middle of the pitch where the ball worked its way to Arthur who hammered it in. The second, from an exceptional counter attack. Mario won the ball deep in his half and drove forward. Playing a neat one-two and then finishing off the move he started. As the half-time whistle went, Churchfields had a clear 3-0 lead in what was a tough first half. As the second half began, Wanstead snatched an early goal back. However Reuben, who had just been brought on as sub quickly restored Churchfield’s three goal lead from an assist by Andi. Reuben then added another from long range after some excellent running from JJ, whose continuous efforts dragged the defenders out of position. Wanstead started to press again but some excellent defending from Christian and Isaiah as well as Josh’s continued excellence, meant that Churchfield’s lead remained well intact. Ben rounded off the victory with a well-taken strike.

Churchfields won 6-1 and are through to the knockout stages.
