British Library Impressed Year 5

British Library Impressed Year 5

Year 5 were lucky enough to experience a brand new exhibition at the British Library on art and literature in Anglo-Saxon times. This was in support of the teaching this half term about the Anglo-Saxons. From a 1300 year-old copy of Beowulf, to a book the size of a small car – our students’ enthusiasm and behaviour was exemplary. We were privileged to have access to documents and artefacts never before seen by the public. This included some of the earliest illustrations of Alfred the Great; arguably the first English King and one of the earliest patrons of education.

The children also saw some early extracts from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Having created our own versions in class, the children were able to critically engage with the original source and impress our tour guide, who just so happened to be a former Churchfields pupil!
