Year 5 astronomers

Year 5 astronomers

After studying the planets and space in Science this term, Year 5 were treated to a journey into Outer Space. The Space Dome visited Churchfields Junior School and set up a simulation of our Solar System, and beyond, in an inflatable dome. In the first session the children did some star-gazing, in particular studying the different composition of stars and constellations. We experienced a whole day from sunrise to sunset with accelerated images tracking from East to West. We zoomed in on different planets, stepping on the different surfaces of the terrestrial planets and looking at the gas giant planets.
The second session was all about space travel. We learned about the life of an astronaut in space and speculated where future missions will go. We were all left in awe and wonder – maybe a future astronaut took their first step in the Space Dome..
